Why I started watching movies alone…?
Let us do some “harate”(chit chat) again about movies. This time i am gonna rant/boast/talk whatever, about “Why I started watching the movies alone?”. Before i get to the point, i wanna give a small historyabout my “movie watching experiences”. I started watching movies at a very young age of 7-8years. My first movie in theatre was “Shhh…!” (A Kannada flick) directed by Upendra. I am pretty sure most of the Kannadigas would have watched it. For those of you who haven’t, it is a horror suspense thriller and is a pretty good watch (yeah.. i am saying that after i watched once i grew up and understood what was shown in the movie). I had been to the cinema with my parents and from then on it started.
I started going to the movies with cousins, friends, family and when everyone was bored i started going alone. Now let me list, how and why i started watching the movies alone?
- As i said earlier, i started going to movies, mostly with friends. But later everyone got busy in life. I mean, the conversion used to be something like this generally when there came a question “shall we go to this movie?”.
Me : Dude I heard about this movie and the reviews are pretty good. Shall we all go?
Friends : Yeah.. sure.. when where?
Me : may be this weekend?
Friends :Β (One by One) 1. Oh Nooo.. I have an appointment with my Dentist.. 2. Oh I can’t make it.. (just no reason) 3. I wanna go but my parents feel bad that i am going out every weekend (though not with me π ).. 4. Come on that’s a very bad movie.. blah blah blah..!! - To be frank and true to the readers, I was this kind of person who used to go to movies and literally sleep on the seat when there came a badly shot scene or something which is slow paced. I never used to understand a logic behind a scene nor did i enjoy it just like any other viewer.. So i got a question.. “Why do I sleep when i go to the movies?”..
- I started watching some movies online/download. This is where it all started.. You get to watch a complete movie, without paying an extra buck!! I started delving slowly into the subject. Like i was used to, i was asleep in some parts of the movies initially. But later, i started some analysis here. ‘Why is this a bad scene according to me?’.. ‘How are the others feeling about it?’.. Questions like these. I must say, this, till date has sometimes led me to do some online research about theΒ subject talked in a scene, before concluding something negative. However, i wanna quote a point here. I never till now have downloaded a Kannada movie. I always pay and watch them in theatre. This is like an oath and I feel, the service that i as an audience is doing to Kannada. π
- Now i started going alone to theatres.. Wow!! now that initially was very tough. I used to feel really odd. I see groups, colleagues, couple, family coming to movies but i am sitting there alone amidst them!! I used to get cold/funny stare at me by all the above mentioned groups.. Some even looked at me like aΒ suicide bomber. I later got used to this.. I infact enjoyed all this and the movie more than what I usually enjoy watching movies with friends. I started making notes. I never slept in movies from then on, however bad the script/scene is.
- Now i make notes of movies i watch. I read the reviews carefully, both newspaper and online. I now get a chance to visualize, the way the scene could have been more rich in what it delivered.
- Watching movies alone, even contributed to my poetry. I write Kannada poems and movies always aroused a question, “what song would I write if i was the lyricist?”.. This challenged me sometimes and also helped me in improving my Kannada.
- Some movies started giving solutions to my problems.. Trust me I never had thought this would happen in my life!! May be you should try too..
- Movies increased the power of Imagination in me. I love imagining things and roaming around with them. Movies was a great source of inspiration here.
I still go to movies with my friends and family. I enjoy it the same way i do, when i go alone. But one change i observed which surprises me is, I got to understand with more clarity, how people felt about a scene? I carefully try and observe my friends/family when a scene is played. I discuss and collect opinions and this really helped me understand how they feel about random topics we folks come across in life!
If you have watched movies alone in theatre, then continue that π there is nothing crazy/wrong in that. Oh and even if it is, “The people who think they are crazy enough to change the world, are the ones who really do” π
Between if you haven’t, then sit alone and watch this movie! I watched it recently and its one awesome flick about drug mafia in Latin American nations like Brazil. Its a true story and the movie is critically acclaimed. Check this wiki source to know more about the movie.
Lucia.., Thinbedakammi nee nelagalleya..
“A poor guy loves a rich girl. Does all tricks to win her heart. Her father says no for their marriage. They both run away. A series of chase, hide and seek, fights happen. Finally the girl’s dad who was as strong as “Rahul Dravid (the Wall)” on the cricket pitch, adamantly denying their marriage, agrees and the movie ends on a happy note.”
How many of you here are bored of this format of movies? Its the same old story told with some patches here and there. A typical software analogy of this would be to “patch” the software hoping that it will do good and passes all the QA efforts. Any person who has the will and wealth to invest in movies becomes the producer for such films, picking up a random director and the crew. When the movie bombs badly in the box office, all sit and whine, including, we poor viewers who paid for multiplex seats and cant tolerate a bit of such movies.
Its time to bring some change. Yeah.. yeah.. i know. Change in the way Indian education system works, the way Indian railways works, Indian sanitation system is etc. But equally important is “Change the way the world sees our cinema”. One such change is “lucia“, a Kannada SciFi movie. So what is the big change this movie is bringing?
- Lucia is a crowd funded movie, the first of its kind in Kannada Films.
- Lucia doesn’t have the charm of a popular hero in it, or isn’t flamboyantly made.
- The Producers and Distributors of this movie are “WE” the audience.
- Oh yeah.. you can make money too with this movie.
- The movie is an exposure to a lot of indigenous talents, especially in Music and Casting. (my favorite point)
These are just a few points that i noted. May be you can make your own list and be proud to be the part of online distributors. Just click on the below link and preorder Lucia.
Oh and meanwhile don’t miss these songs!! They are very catchy..
